Listen Bird One.

Transcribed Interview – The Listen Bird.

Interview took place in Old Strathcona, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on March 27, 2010.

Question: Are you familiar with the ‘Listen Bird’?

Answer: “Yes. I know that it’s around the city of Edmonton. I live in the [Old Strathcona] area and I find that I notice it more than once on a daily basis. I think that Drew Barrymore has a tattoo of the bird on her arm…”

Q: What is your interpretation of the meaning of the ‘Listen Bird’?

A: “For me, the Listen Bird is a reminder that it is important to have an open perception about things. I think that in today’s society it is really easy to be really narrow minded and closed off from the society around us. In the fast paced world that we live in it is really easy to shut yourself off and isolate yourself from society. So, when I see the Listen Bird around the city, it serves as a reminder to be more aware of my surroundings and the broader society as a whole.”

Q: Do you have any ideas about who the original author was?

A: “I don’t think that there ever was an original author, rather a collection of like minded individuals within the community that were committed to raising the awareness of their peers. I think [the Listen Bird] is a manifestation of a community attempting to better itself and encouraging others to be more open minded about the world around them. I think the original author was the community.”

Q: Who do you think was the original intended message was?

A: “I think the original message was a reminder for the community to be more aware and more astute to their surroundings. I think it was originally conceived as to encourage people to be more aware and to engage more openly with society.”
